Book Review: The Joy of Advent
A sweet way to prepare for Christ's birth and celebrate His coming
A Beautiful Tradition in the Making
The Joy of Advent by Rebecca & Stephen Grabill, PhD is a lovely book that makes it easy to create a liturgical routine within the home during Advent and Christmas.
The cover itself was enough to make me want to add it to our holiday book collection, but what’s inside is even better. Each day from the beginning of Advent to Epiphany contains two options: one page geared for teens and adults, and another for the same day but with younger family members in mind. The teen and adult reflection has a scripure passage and a brief writing to help families reflect on the reading. The younger family option has a passage, an illustration, and additional components like a daily song, a short reading passage, and discussion questions. Both options are easy to digest in a short sitting, but they both also do justice to the solemnity and beauty of the season.
I can’t understate how gorgeous this book is. Simple yet beautiful illustrations by Clare Therese Gray enhance the classic feel. It is something that could easily be displayed in the home, or left out on a table within easy reach for family devotions throughout Advent and Christmas.
One of my favorite parts is the inclusion of delightful activities, traditions, recipes, and crafts sprinkled throughout. They are suggested here and there, but there aren’t so many of them that they become overwhelming, and it would be easy for parents to choose the ones that would work for their family.
In short, The Joy of Advent is available now and is a beautiful family tradition just waiting to be brought into your home and shared with those you love.
